BARIUM OXIDE

Molecule: BaO

Molar mass: 153.34

CAS No: 1304-28-5

Melting point: 1923

Density (g/cm-3): 5.72

Character: Odorless, a white hygroscopic compound formed by the burning of barium in oxygen. It transforms into barium hydroxide on contact with water.

Appearance: white to cream powder

BaO: 95% min

BaCO3: 4% max

Strontium oxide: 1.5% max

Calcium oxide: 0.7% max

Sulfur(S): 0.4% max

Package: 25Kg iron pail inner with plastic bag

Application: For lubricate oil, it is used as desiccant additive and dehydrating agent. Barium oxide is mainly used as a coating for hot cathodes (superconductive material), and in certain kinds of glass such as optical crown glass and cathode ray tubes (getter agent for electronic vacuum tube in producing CRT). It replaced lead oxide for kinescope (Lead oxide was used to raise the refractive index, but it also raised the dispersive power. Barium oxide only raises the refractive index). Also has use as an ethoxylation catalyst in the reaction of ethylene oxide and alcohols, which takes place 150 and 200°C.

Main purposes: for manufacturing barium salt or the preparation of hydrogen peroxide, used as oxidant, bleaching agent, mordant, disinfectant in ceramic and glass industry, which is superior to lime, calcium chloride and alumina gel/sol. Also used for igniter of aluminum welding and to refine in the line of beet sugar.
